Understanding AI Eligibility and AI Bifurcation

Learn how Postscript's AI bifurcation works, the automatic per-send check that determines whether a subscriber is AI-eligible, and how it affects AI-generated messages across Shopper and Infinity Testing.

Overview

Before Postscript sends any AI-generated message, the platform automatically checks whether the recipient subscriber has explicitly consented to receive AI messages. This check happens on every send and it's called AI bifurcation.

Subscribers who pass this check are considered AI-eligible and receive AI-generated messages as intended. Subscribers who are not AI-eligible do not receive AI messages. Instead, their experience depends on which product is sending the message (see How bifurcation affects each product below).

Important: Standard SMS marketing (Campaigns, Automations, and any non-AI messages are unaffected by this change.)

Why AI Eligibility Matters

The regulatory landscape around AI-generated messaging is moving in one direction: toward stricter requirements. TCPA case law is actively evolving, and courts are establishing that traditional SMS consent doesn't automatically cover AI-generated messages. Postscript started building for this in September 2024 — adding explicit AI consent language to all opt-in methods before it became an industry requirement.

That means the majority of subscribers across the Postscript network are already AI-eligible today. The cost of waiting is real: brands that act proactively protect their AI-eligible list now and avoid having to rebuild from a smaller, less valuable base later.

AI Eligibility Tiers

Every subscriber in your Postscript account falls into one of two eligibility tiers.

Unverified

Who they are: Subscribers whose opt-in source cannot be verified by Postscript — typically those imported from a third-party provider or opt-in source where the original consent record can't be audited.

When a merchant uploads or imports a list, they certify that the source is compliant via a checkbox during onboarding or list upload.

What they can receive:

✓ Merchant-sent SMS marketing messages

✗ AI-generated content (Shopper, Infinity Testing)

✗ Postscript Plus messages

AI Verified

Who they are: Subscribers whose opt-in included explicit consent to receive AI-generated messages. This is the highest consent tier, and there are no restrictions on which Postscript products can message them.

Qualifying opt-in sources include:

  • All Postscript popups (since September 2024)

  • Alia Onsite Opt-in (OOI) popups (since December 2025)

  • New Back in Stock popups and embedded forms

  • New desktop and mobile landing pages (created on or after April 2026)

  • Shopify Checkout UI Extension subscribers (since February 2025)

What they can receive:

✓ Merchant-sent SMS marketing messages

✓ AI-generated content (Shopper, Infinity Testing)

✓ Postscript Plus messages

How Bifurcation Affects Each Product

Shopper

Subscriber

Not AI Eligible

Shopper Responses

Receives Shopper messages as normal

Receives a Consent Upgrade message. If they opt-in, Shopper resumes the conversation. If they don't respond or decline, they receive no further AI messaging.

Infinity Testing

Not AI Eligible

Campaigns

If in the test cohort, receives AI message. If in control, receives Inspiration Message.

Excluded from test cohort; receives Inspiration Message.

Automations

If in test cohort, receives AI message. If in control, receives Inspiration Message.

Excluded from test cohort; receives inspiration message.

Consent Upgrade

Consent Upgrade is a feature that automatically recovers AI eligibility for ineligible subscribers when they reach out through Shopper.

How it works

  1. An AI-ineligible subscriber texts a brand that is using Shopper Responses.

  2. Postscript automatically sends a compliance-approved consent message in the same thread.

  3. If the subscriber replies Y or YES, their consent is upgraded to AI Verified.

  4. Shopper immediately resumes the conversation with full context intact.

If the subscriber's reply is neutral or ambiguous, the system will send one re-prompt. If the second response is also ambiguous or there is no response, the system does not trigger again.

Key facts

  • Automatically enabled for all Shopper accounts — no setup required.

  • Works on both SMS and RCS.

  • It only triggers when AI-ineligible subscribers reach out, not your full list. Most merchants see minimal billing impact.

  • If a subscriber upgrades their consent, they become AI Verified and are eligible for all AI messages going forward — including Shopper, Infinity Testing, and future AI products.

Turning Consent Upgrade off

If you'd like to disable Consent Upgrade, you can do so in your account settings:

Account Settings → Compliance → On-Thread AI Consent Collection

How to Improve Your AI-Eligible Audience

The single most effective way to grow your AI-verified subscriber base is to use a Postscript or Alia opt-in method. Every new subscriber collected through these sources is automatically AI Verified from day one.

If you're currently using a third-party popup, those subscribers will come in as Unverified and won't be eligible to receive AI messages. Migrating to a Postscript popup (or Alia OOI) is the fastest path to a fully eligible list. Consent Upgrade will also help your list self-heal over time through inbound Shopper conversations.

Viewing AI Eligibility in the App

Postscript surfaces AI eligibility data in two places:

Dashboard

Your homepage dashboard shows the percentage of your subscriber base that is AI-eligible. You can expand the view to see the change over the last 90 days.

Subscriber Profile

In the Profile section (also accessible via Conversations), each subscriber has an AI Eligibility: True / False tag so you can see eligibility at the individual level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my AI eligibility percentage low?
This reflects how many of your subscribers gave explicit consent to receive AI messages at the time they opted in. The best way to increase this number is to switch to a Postscript or Alia opt-in method — every new subscriber collected that way comes in AI Verified automatically.

Does this affect my standard SMS campaigns or automations?
No. AI bifurcation only applies to AI-generated messages. Standard campaigns, automations, and any non-AI messages are completely unaffected.

Can I keep using my third-party popup?
You can, but subscribers collected through third-party popups will be Unverified and won't receive AI-generated messages. Over time, this limits the reach and performance of your AI products. We recommend migrating to a Postscript or Alia popup for the best results.

What if a subscriber upgrades their consent through Consent Upgrade?
They become AI Verified and are immediately eligible to receive all AI messages across Shopper, Infinity Testing, and any future AI products. Their upgraded status is permanent.
