Who gets this? Shops on all Postscript plans have access to this feature. Learn more about Postscript Plans.
Merchants using Postscript have two methods for enabling subscribers to opt-in to a mailing list. While Confirmed Opt-in (also known as double opt-in) has been in use for years, Postscript's new Onsite Opt-in dramatically boosts conversion rates.
With Onsite Opt-in, subscribers complete the opt-in process without ever leaving your site, while Confirmed Opt-in requires new subscribers to switch to their text messaging app. Removing that step (particularly for desktop signups) greatly increases conversion rates and revenue.
Why Opt-in Matters
If Postscript does not receive an onsite opt-in or confirmed opt-in for an entered phone number, then the number is not added as a subscriber. By employing one of these methods, brands can:
Build a verified and engaged subscriber list, increasing potential ROI while decreasing sending spend.
Create a record of a subscriber’s consent to receive your shop's recurring text messages, allowing you to prove the subscriber knowingly opted in if you ever need to.
Validate phone numbers entered at checkout, in popups, or via forms, which prevents someone from falsely opting in with a number that can't receive SMS messages (i.e., a landline).
In this article, we outline how both opt-in methods work and provide you with some resources you can reference to ensure your SMS program is compliant.
How Onsite Opt-in Works
A site visitor enters their phone number in a popup, form, or checkout page.
The subscriber is then prompted to enter a code sent via SMS to that phone number.
Finally, the subscriber can just tap the code when it's overlayed on the screen after receipt or enter it manually.
Customizing the Onsite Opt-in Experience in Your Popup
Onsite opt-in is built into the popup templates. Just customize the text and images to match your brand and signup offer.
Select Acquisition from the left-hand menu and then select the Create button in the upper right. Select New popup from the drop-down.
Pick a template and then select the corresponding Use Template button.
Select Onsite Phone tile above, then select any text or image elements to edit.
Select the Onsite Verify tile and do the same.
How Confirmed Opt-In Works
After a site visitor enters their phone number in a popup, form, or checkout page, the popup will prompt them to confirm their opt-in. Here's an example:
The subscriber will receive the following message on the mobile device that belongs to the phone number they entered:
Shop Name: Reply Y to subscribe to recurring automated promotional msgs (e.g. cart reminders). Msg & data rates may apply.
Once the subscriber replies Y, they'll receive the below confirmation message:
Shop Name: You're subscribed! Reply STOP to unsubscribe, HELP for help. Msgs powered by Postscript.
From there, subscribers will be ushered into any welcome series you have set up for subscribers who opt-in via popups, forms, or checkout.
