Abandoned cart messages target individuals who've added one or more items to their shopping cart but have not completed their purchase.

With an abandoned cart automation, you can automatically reach out to these shoppers, remind them of their purchase, and link them back to their cart. Simply create your abandoned cart automation once and let Postscript do the rest.

How this Abandoned Cart Benefits You

  • Target shoppers who've abandoned a shopping cart that contains a specific number of items.
  • Offer discounts proportional to the size of the cart. For example, you could offer free shipping or a certain percent off a cart with a large number of items, or incentivize shoppers to add more items to their cart to receive a discount offer.

Choose the Automation Triggers and Filters

Every abandoned cart automation should start with the basics: Automation Trigger as Checkout Started and Cancellation Trigger as Order Created.

From here, you'll add a Trigger Filter, which lets you specify the characteristics of the shopping carts (and their shoppers) that you want to receive this abandoned cart automation.

  1. Select Yes from the Trigger Filters drop-down.
  2. Select + Add Filter.
  3. Select the + Add Filter Field drop-down, then select Line Items.
  4. Select + Add Entry.
  5. Since you want to identify carts with a certain number of items, select Quantity.
  6. Choose your refinement criteria and enter that desired value amount
    • For example, you could target carts with a quantity Less Than the value of 2.
    • You could also set a firm number using Equals and the value of 2.
    • The use of is just an example. The quantity number you choose will depend on your shop and strategy.
  7. Select Save & Continue to Messages in the bottom-right corner of the page.

Create Your Message

It's important to get your abandoned cart message right since carrier regulations allow you to send only one message within 48 hours of the shopper abandoning their cart.

  1. Include a dynamic product photo. Postscript will feature a photo of the most expensive item in the subscriber's cart. It's a great way to remind customers what they've left behind.
  2. Add personalization with message tags. Add dynamic tags such as {first_name} so that the sent message populates with the subscriber's first name. It's a simple and effective way to build rapport and trust with your customers.
  3. Offer an incentive. You can go two routes with your incentive: if the customer has met the requirement for the discount, let them know, but if they haven't, let them know how close they are, what action they need to take, and remind them about the available discount.
  4. Link directly to a subscriber's cart. Add a dynamic abandoned cart link that allows the subscriber to click right back into their shopping cart from your text message. You can create an automatic discount in Shopify that will auto-apply the discount to the cart once the product quantity requirement is met. More on creating that discount below.
  • Create a sense of urgency (not pictured). Use your message copy to create a sense of urgency around the cart. Popular examples include This offer expires at midnight! or These products are going fast—get yours before they're gone!

Set Up Your Discount in Shopify

Creating product quantity requirements for a discount is an offer you'll set up in Shopify. You'll use Postscript messages to let customers know where they are in meeting that requirement, but Shopify will handle validating the cart size and applying the discount.

  1. Select Discounts in the side menu of your Shopify dashboard.
  2. Select Create discount in the top-right corner of the page, then select Automatic Discount.
  3. Give your discount a Name.
  4. Select the Discount Type (e.g., percentage, fixed amount, etc.) and define the Value.
  5. Scroll to Minimum Requirements and select the Minimum Quantity of Items button.
  6. Enter the minimum quantity of items needed to receive the discount.
  7. Select Save in the top-right corner of the page.

You're all set. This discount will now auto-apply to carts with a minimum product quantity that meets your requirement. You also have the option to set this discount to apply to specific products or collections in your shop.
