Activate SMS Collection at Shopify Three-Page Checkout

Are you in the right place? This article is for non-Shopify Plus merchants who have not yet upgraded to one page checkout. To learn how to collect SMS subscribers at one page checkout, see here.

With Shopify, you can compliantly collect SMS subscribers during the checkout process and have those subscribers flow through to Postscript.

Why You Should Enable SMS Collection at Shopify Checkout

  • Easily ensure compliant SMS opt-in for all subscribers.
  • Customize your checkbox label to offer an opt-in incentive, such as a discount.
  • Allow Postscript and Shopify to communicate opt-in and opt-out statuses for all subscribers.

What to Know About SMS Collection at Checkout

  • Subscribers who opt-in at Shopify Checkout fall under the Subscriber Created (Keyword, Popup, API) trigger filter category. This means they will receive any welcome series automation triggered with this filter. (Note: Subscribers opting in via a Shopify Plus checkout will not be included in this category).
  • Postscript will collect SMS subscribers via Shopify Checkout after the first checkout page when the site visitor selects the Continue to Shipping button.

Enable SMS Collection at Checkout

  1. Select Settings in the bottom-left corner of your Shopify Admin dashboard.
  2. Select Checkout on the left side of the page.
  3. Locate the Customer information section.
  4. Under Shipping address phone number, select Optional. This ensures that the phone number collection field is visible so that your opt-in checkbox appears. While you can require the phone number, SMS opt-in should always remain optional.
  5. Scroll down to locate the Consent for marketing section.
  6. Select the checkbox labeled SMS Marketing. A blue SMS consent callout should appear below it. Note: See the following guides if you need to update your Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for SMS collection.
  7. Select Save in the top-right corner of the page.

Customize Opt-In Checkbox Language

When collecting subscribers, you can customize what language appears alongside the opt-in checkbox.

  2. Select Checkout from the Settings menu.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Manage checkout language.
  4. We recommend you enter Marketing in the search bar to help you quickly locate the Checkout & system / Checkout marketing section.

  5. In the Accept sms checkbox label field, enter your desired text (i.e., Text me incredible content and exclusive news and deals.)

What Happens Next?

Postscript will add new subscribers as your Shopify customers opt-in to SMS marketing.

You can test your opt-in flow if desired. If you've already opted-in to your store with your testing number, you'll need to unsubscribe the number first.

View Subscribers Who Opted-in Through Shopify Checkout

You can view how many subscribers have opted-in via Shopify Checkout from your Subscriber Analytics tab.

Scroll down to find the Opt In Source column for a list of your subscriber sources, then find Shopify Checkout Customer Consent Subscribers listed to see how many subscribers were collected at checkout. You can adjust the time frame (e.g., Last 7 daysLast 30 days, etc.) in the top-right corner of the page.
