Setting Up Attentive Journeys for Your Fondue A/B Test

Learn how to update your Attentive Journeys for a Fondue CashBack A/B test — setting up Control and Test variants so your results stay clean.

If you use Attentive for SMS and/or email, you can run an A/B test to see how a Fondue CashBack offer (% back) performs against your current offer (% off). Setting the test up correctly keeps your subscriber data clean and your results trustworthy.

In this article, we walk through how to update your Attentive Journeys for a Fondue CashBack A/B test. Complete all three parts before turning the journey on so the test runs cleanly.

IMPORTANT! If using Attentive popups, follow these steps first.

Part One: Clone Your Journey

Start by making a copy of your existing welcome journey. The clone is what you’ll edit for the CashBack side of the test; your original journey stays untouched and continues running for your Control audience.

  1. Locate your existing welcome journey in Attentive.

  2. Select the three-dot menu and select Make a Copy.

  3. Rename the cloned journey based on your preferred naming conventions.

This cloned journey becomes the CashBack (Test) version of the A/B test. Part Two walks through the edits to make before turning it on.

Part Two: Edit the Journey

There are two sets of edits to make on the cloned journey: copy updates and link/UTM updates. You’ll do both on every message in the journey that mentions an offer or coupon.

Update journey copy

  1. Open each message in the cloned journey.

  2. Change the offer value in each relevant space to your CashBack offer.

  3. Change “Off” to “Back” wherever it appears.

Update SMS links

On every SMS that contains an offer link, you’ll add the CashBack UTM directly to the short link parameters.

  1. Open the SMS message in the journey editor.

  2. Select the short link to open the Edit short link panel.

  3. Add a new parameter:

    Parameter name: cashback

    Value: [your promotion UTM] — e.g., welcome25

  4. Click Update shortlink to save.

Update email links

For email, you don’t need to update each link individually — the CashBack UTM can be added once in the email’s Link tracking section and it will apply across every link in that email.

  1. Open the email message in the journey editor.

  2. Scroll to the Link tracking section in the email details.

  3. Click Add parameter to add the CashBack UTM:

    Parameter name: cashback

    Value: [your promotion UTM] — e.g., welcome25

  4. Save the email. The parameter will now be applied to every link in this email.

Important! Only make these UTM and copy updates on messages that mention an offer or coupon. Other messages in the journey (e.g., brand intro, post-purchase content) should be left as-is.

Part Three: Activate the Journey

Before turning the journey on, do a final pass to confirm every edit is in place.

  1. Walk through every message in the cloned journey one more time to confirm:

    • The CashBack offer value is correct in all copy

    • The cashback UTM is present on every SMS short link with an offer

    • The cashback UTM is present in the Link tracking section of every offer email

  2. Select Turn On so the journey can be assigned to the appropriate sign-up units.

NOTE: Double-check every message before launch. Skipping the UTM on even one message can mean missed CashBack attribution for those subscribers, which will skew your results.
