If you use Alia pop-ups alongside Postscript SMS and Klaviyo email, you can run an A/B test to see how a Fondue CashBack offer (% back) performs against your current offer (% off). Setting the test up correctly keeps your subscriber data clean and your results trustworthy.
In this article, we walk through how to update your Alia pop-ups for a Fondue CashBack A/B test.
What is a Fondue CashBack A/B Test?
A Fondue CashBack A/B test compares two versions of your welcome pop-up so you can measure which offer drives better results. One version (the Control) keeps your existing discount, such as 15% Off. The other version (the Test) swaps in a Fondue CashBack offer, such as 25% Back. Alia serves each version to a portion of your US visitors, and you compare performance to decide which offer to keep.
For example, a merchant currently offering "15% Off" for signing up might test "25% Back" against it. Half of US visitors see the discount, half see the CashBack offer, and the merchant tracks which one converts and drives more revenue.
Because Fondue CashBack is only available for purchases made in USD, this test runs for US visitors only. A separate non-US pop-up keeps collecting international subscribers so their signups don't skew your results.
What you'll build
By the end of this guide, you'll have:
A Control pop-up (your existing offer, e.g. % off)
A Test pop-up (the CashBack offer, e.g. % back)
A separate non-US pop-up that continues collecting subscribers internationally without skewing your test results
IMPORTANT! Complete all five sections below before launching your test. Skipping a step — especially the per-screen Klaviyo list updates — can mix your test and control audiences and invalidate your results.
Part One: Create New Campaigns
IMPORTANT! Fondue is only available for US-based customers so we recommend targeting the Fondue CashBack pop-ups to US visitors only.
Start by creating two new campaigns in Alia. One houses the A/B test pop-ups, and the other houses a separate pop-up for non-US visitors.
Select Create New Campaign in the the top right corner of your Alia dashboard.
Title the first campaign: name it Fondue CashBack A/B Test.
Create and title the second campaign: name it Fondue Non-US.
NOTE: The Fondue CashBack A/B Test campaign is where you'll clone your pop-ups for the test. The Fondue Non-US campaign is where you'll set up your separate, US-excluded pop-up.
Part Two: Clone Your Pop-ups
Next, duplicate your current live pop-up into the new A/B test campaign so you have a Control and a Test version side by side.
Open your current live pop-up and select Duplicate To…
Duplicate into Fondue CashBack A/B Test. Choose the campaign you created in Part One as the destination.
Make two copies of each live pop-up, using this naming convention:
Fondue CashBack A/B Test - Control - [Offer Value] (e.g., Fondue CashBack A/B Test - Control - 15% Off)
Fondue CashBack A/B Test - Test - [Offer Value] (e.g., Fondue CashBack A/B Test - Test - 25% Back)
Edit targeting on the cloned pop-ups
Open each cloned pop-up and adjust the targeting settings so the test serves to US visitors only.
Set In countries to United States.
Set Is not on pages → by path only → contains to exclude the CashBack redemption paths:
?cashback&cashback
Remove the blank default pop-up
When you create a new campaign in Alia, a blank default pop-up is added automatically. After duplicating your pop-ups in, your campaign will likely contain three pop-ups: your two clones plus the blank one. Remove the blank pop-up so it doesn't serve to visitors.
Open the blank default pop-up in the Fondue CashBack A/B Test campaign.
Open the options menu.
Select Delete (or Archive).
Confirm to remove the blank pop-up from the campaign.
Running a re-test or V2?
TIP! If you're running an updated version of an initial test, add "V2" to the front of the cloned pop-up names — for example, V2 Fondue CashBack A/B Test - Control - 20% Off. This keeps your reporting easy to tell apart from the first test.
Part Three: Set Up the Non-US Pop-up
This pop-up runs independently of your A/B test, for non-US visitors. Because CashBack is only available for purchases made in USD, the non-US pop-up is a clone of the Control. This way, email and SMS collection continues for international subscribers and their data doesn't skew your test results.
Clone your current live welcome pop-up to the Fondue Non-US campaign.
Edit the targeting on the cloned pop-up:
Not in countries: United States
Is not on pages → by path only → contains:
?cashbackand&cashback
Part Four: Edit the Control Pop-up (X% Off)
Now connect the Control pop-up to the matching Klaviyo list (and Postscript keyword, if applicable) so subscribers are properly tagged for the test.
Go to Integration Settings → Klaviyo Settings → Email List.
Select your Control list — the one you created in Klaviyo for this test (e.g., Fondue A/B Test - Control).
Update Klaviyo on every submission step
The Klaviyo Email List must be set on every step of the pop-up where users submit their email or phone number — not just the first one.
Open the pop-up editor.
Step through each screen of the pop-up: email capture, SMS capture, welcome message, and bubble teaser.
Confirm the Klaviyo Email List dropdown is set to your Control list on every screen with a submission field.
NOTE: Missing even one submission step means some subscribers land in the wrong list, which mixes your test and control audiences. Double-check every screen.
Optional: Postscript keyword (if not using onsite opt-in)
If you're on Postscript but not actively using onsite opt-in, connect the matching keyword.
Go to Integration Settings → Postscript Settings → Keyword.
Select the Control keyword created in Postscript for this offer (e.g., FONDUE10OFF).
Part Five: Edit the Test Pop-up (X% Back)
On the Test pop-up, update the copy to reflect the CashBack offer and connect it to your matching Test list and keyword.
Update the pop-up and welcome message copy. Change the offer value in each relevant space to your CashBack offer, and change "Off" to "Back" wherever it appears.
Go to Integration Settings → Klaviyo Settings → Email List.
Select your Test list — the one you created in Klaviyo for this test (e.g., Fondue A/B Test - Test).
Update the Klaviyo Email List on every screen where users submit their email and phone number, just as you did on the Control pop-up.
Optional: Postscript keyword (if not using onsite opt-in)
Go to Integration Settings → Postscript Settings → Keyword.
Select the Test keyword created in Postscript for the CashBack offer.
TIP! Before you launch, check every screen of both pop-ups (email capture, SMS capture, welcome message, and bubble) to confirm the right Klaviyo list is selected on each submission step, the right Postscript keyword is selected (if applicable), the copy reflects the correct offer (Off vs. Back), and the targeting is set correctly — US-only on the test pop-ups, non-US on the standalone pop-up.
Things to Know
Fondue CashBack is US-only. It's available only for purchases made in USD, which is why the A/B test targets United States and a separate non-US pop-up handles international visitors.
Klaviyo lists must be set per screen. The Email List dropdown lives on every submission step, and each must point to the correct list — the most common source of "dirty" test data.
A blank default pop-up is created with every new campaign. Delete or archive it in the A/B test campaign so it doesn't serve to visitors.
Path exclusions (
?cashbackand&cashback) keep pop-ups from showing on CashBack redemption pages.Postscript keywords are only needed if you're on Postscript but not using onsite opt-in.
