Abandoned cart messages target individuals who've added one or more items to their shopping cart but have not completed their purchase.
With an abandoned cart automation, you can automatically reach out to these shoppers, remind them of their purchase, and link them back to their cart. Simply create your abandoned cart automation once and let Postscript do the rest.
How this Abandoned Cart Benefits You
- Target shoppers who've abandoned a shopping cart of a certain value (low value, high value, or VIP value).
- Offer discounts proportional to the value of the cart. For example, a large discount to close those high-level carts, but a smaller discount for the low-value carts.
Choose the Automation Triggers and Filters
Every abandoned cart automation should start with the basics: Automation Trigger as Checkout Started and Cancellation Trigger as Order Created.
From here, you'll add a Trigger Filter, which lets you specify the characteristics of the shopping carts (and their shoppers) that you want to receive this abandoned cart automation.
When creating value-based abandoned cart automations, it's important to know that if you create a High-Value automation, you also need to create a Low-Value automation that targets your remaining subscribers. This ensures all of your subscribers are receiving an abandoned cart message. We'll explain more below.
- Select Yes from the Trigger Filters drop-down.
- Select + Add Filter.
- Select the + Add Filter Field drop-down, then select Subtotal Price.
- Why Subtotal Price? The subtotal price is the value of the cart before taxes, shipping, and any discounts are added. You can also choose Total Price, which includes all costs.
- Since you want to identify carts with a high value, choose your refinement criteria and enter that desired value amount.
- For example, you could target carts with a subtotal Greater Than the value of $100.00.
- You could also set a range by selecting Between the values of $100.00 and $250.00.
- These are just examples. What you define as "high-value" will depend on the products you sell and your shop strategy.
- Select Save & Continue to Messages in the bottom-right corner of the page.
- Since you want to identify carts with a low value, choose Less Than from the refinement drop-down and enter the same value you entered above.
- For example, if you created a high-value automation that targets carts with a subtotal greater than $100, then you would want to set this automation to Less Than the value of $100.00.
- Similarly, if you created a high-value automation that targets carts with a subtotal between $100-$250, then you would want to set this automation to Less Than the value of $100.00. You would also need to create an additional abandoned cart set as Greater Than the value of $250.00.
- Select Save & Continue to Messages in the bottom-right corner of the page.
Create Your Message
It's important to get your abandoned cart message right since carrier regulations allow you to send only one message within 48 hours of the shopper abandoning their cart.
- Include a dynamic product photo. Postscript will feature a photo of the most expensive item in the subscriber's cart.
- Add personalization with message tags. Add dynamic tags such as {first_name} so that the sent message populates with the subscriber's first name. It's a simple and effective way to build rapport and trust with your customers.
- Create a sense of urgency. Use your message copy to create a sense of urgency around the cart. Popular examples include This offer expires at midnight! or These products are going fast—get yours before they're gone!
- Offer an incentive. For your high-value abandoned carts, you could offer a large discount to incentivize them to complete their order. With a low-value abandoned cart, you might choose to offer a smaller discount and/or use the opportunity to share some educational content (e.g., link to a blog post, share a product review, etc.)
- Link directly to a subscriber's cart. Add a dynamic abandoned cart link that will auto-apply the discount and allow the subscriber to click right back into their shopping cart from your text message.
