Grow Your List with Email

Tip: Select any of the images or GIFs in this article for a closer look.

Prior to jumping into SMS marketing, you likely dedicated time and effort to growing an email subscriber list. These are individuals already invested in your brand and products, making them ideal for potential SMS subscribers.

Luckily, it's easy to include opportunities to opt-in to SMS marketing within an email. If you use an email marketing platform, you might create a dynamic button that kicks off the opt-in process. You can also use keywords and include your short code or phone number. Whichever approach you take, it's crucial you also include TCPA-compliant opt-in language.

Why You Want to Grow Your List with Email

  • Target a group of people already invested in your brand and products.
  • Easily provide opt-in opportunities for those on desktop and mobile devices.
  • Track subscribers via email opt-in with a unique keyword and target them with a specific welcome series, automation, or campaign.

  1. Select Acquisition in the side menu of your Postscript dashboard, then select List Growth Tools.
  2. Locate the Convert your email list option and select Get Started to the far-right of the option.
  3. Choose your Keyword. We strongly recommend you create a unique keyword so you can track and segment subscribers who opt-in from email.
  4. Select Create Page to create a Shopify landing page. Individuals who view the email on a desktop or tablet will be directed to this landing page to opt-in.
  5.  Edit your Mobile Opt-In Message. For individuals who view the email on their mobile device, selecting the link with launch their native messaging app with this opt-in message pre-loaded.
    • If your keyword is identical to the shop name included in your message, your link creation will error out. Please use a keyword that is not your exact store name.
  6. Select Get Link to generate your email opt-in link.

Add a Dynamic Button

Adding a dynamic button to your emails allows you to link your SMS opt-in link and convert email subscribers to SMS.

Email marketing platforms, such as Klaviyo, make it easy to include a button with their email builder. While we walk through Klaviyo in the below GIF, other email marketing platforms likely have similar functionality. Contact your email marketing support team for assistance, if needed.

Want all email recipients to see the button?

  1. Select the Button block in your email draft.
  2. In the side edit panel, copy your opt-in link in the Link URL field.
  3. Select Save.

Want only those email recipients who haven't previously opted-in to SMS to see the button?

  1. Select the Button block in your email draft.
  2. In the side edit panel, copy your opt-in link in the Link URL field.
  3. Select the ? icon at the top of the edit panel.
  4. Enable the On/Off toggle so it appears On.
  5. Next, define your condition. Enter not person|lookup:'Accepts SMS' in the Condition field
  6. Select Save.

Opt-In With Keyword Only

You always have the option to create an opt-in opportunity with just your keyword and short code or phone number.

We still strongly recommend you create a unique keyword so you can track and segment subscribers who opt-in from email. You'll also want to make sure you clearly display TCPA-compliant language below the keyword call-to-action.

Example Example 2 Example 3 Example 4

Compliance Language Requirement

When collecting subscribers, the TCPA requires you to include necessary compliance language that informs visitors that they are opting into SMS messaging from your store. This language needs to appear beneath your call to action (e.g., a dynamic button or Text "DOGGONE" to 54631)

Here's the TCPA-approved compliance language:

*By providing your phone number, you agree to receive recurring automated marketing text messages (e.g. cart reminders) from this shop and third parties acting on its behalf. Consent is not a condition to obtain goods or services. Msg & data rates may apply. Msg frequency varies. Reply HELP for help and STOP to cancel. You also agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

Note: In order to collect subscribers compliantly, your shop's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy need to be hyperlinked in the language shown above. If they cannot be hyperlinked, the full URLs of each need to be included so a viewer may search your terms or privacy policy if needed.

For example, "You also agree to the Terms of Service (https:/myshop.com/terms-of-service/) and Privacy Policy (https://myshop.com/privacy-policy/).”
