Cross-sells and up-sells are marketing staples made easy with Postscript automations. Tell Postscript what items to look out for, what items to recommend, and let the automations run in the background. It's a great, personalized way to engage customers and convert additional sales.

Why You Should Create Cross-sell and Up-sell Automations

  • Reach out to specific parts of your customer base with curated recommendations based on order history.
  • Increase customers' average order value (AOV).

Create a Cross-sell Automation

Cross-sell automations give you the opportunity to suggest related products based on the contents of a customer's previous orders.

To do this, you'll need to define your cross-sell criteria, or which items Postscript should look for in previous orders. It's how Postscript will know which subscriber to pull into the cross-sell automation.

Create Your Automation

  1. Select Messaging in the side menu of your Postscript dashboard, then select Automations.
  2. Select Create Automation in the top-right corner of the page.
  3. Select Custom Automation.
  4. Give your automation a Name that helps you identify it from other automations.
    • For example, our automation name is CROSS-SELL: Winter Pom Hats (Purchased Coats) which tells us, at-a-glance, that this automation will suggest winter pom hats to customers who have previously ordered a coat.
  5. Select Order Delivered from the Automation Trigger drop-down.

Define Your Cross-sell Criteria

  1. Under Trigger Filter, select Yes.
  2. Add a filter by selecting + Add Filter.
    • Select + Add Filter Field and select Line Items from the options listed.
    • You want this automation to consider line items from previous orders. Select ANY to consider every available line item.
  3. Select your filter criteria.
    • You can choose to specify items by their SKU, Variant ID, Product Title, and more. Get as specific as you want.
      • For example, you have three coat styles that you know complement the style of hat you're going to recommend in your automation. You can enter the specific SKUs or Variant IDs for those items. Doing so would require you to create additional filter fields for each coat style.
      • For our example, we chose Product Title because we want to recommend this style of hat to anyone who has ever ordered any style of coat from our store.
    • Choose your refinement filter.
      • The default Equals option is designed to look for the specific value you define for this filter. If we entered "Coat", then the automation would look for product titles that are exactly "Coat."
      • Since we want the automation to consider all types of coats, we'll choose Contains. Now the automation will look for product titles that contain the word "Coat."
    • Enter your value in the field that appears.
      • If we wanted to get more specific, we could enter Women's Coat or Kids Coat to match the product titles in our Shopify store.

Create an Up-sell Automation

Up-sell automations give you the opportunity to suggest a more expensive or premium product or offer based on the contents of a customer's previous orders.

To do this, you'll need to define your up-sell criteria, or which items Postscript should look for in previous orders. It's how Postscript will know which subscriber to pull into the up-sell automation.

Create Your Automation

  1. Select Messaging in the side menu of your Postscript dashboard, then select Automations.
  2. Select Create Automation in the top-right corner of the page.
  3. Select Custom Automation.
  4. Give your automation a Name. We recommend the name be specific to the purpose of the automation.
    • For example, our automation name is UP-SELL: Skincare Bundle which tells us, at-a-glance, that this automation will suggest a skincare product bundle to customers who have previously ordered a specific skincare item (or items).
  5. Select Order Delivered from the Automation Trigger drop-down.

Define Your Up-sell Criteria

      • For our example, we chose SKU because we want to recommend this skincare bundle to customers who have purchased a specific skincare item. Maybe this bundle includes a larger size of that product or offers additional products that complete the routine. We could enter the SKU for any of the items included in the bundle.
    • Choose your refinement filter.
      • The default Equals option is designed to look for the specific value you define for this filter. Since we enter specific SKU numbers, this filter works.
    • Enter your value in the field that appears. In our case, this is the SKU(s) for our item(s).
Note: When recommending an upsell product, you might want to eliminate those subscribers who have purchased the recommended item in the past. You can enable the User Filter, select Purchased Product Items, and enter the recommended item (in our example, it would be "Skincare Bundle"). Now Postscript will only send the upsell recommendation to customers who have purchased specific items but have not previously purchased the skincare bundle.
